Study Abroad from Nepal: Complete Guide for 2027 Intakes
Everything a Nepali student needs to plan studying abroad for the 2027 intakes: choosing a country and course, costs, IELTS or PTE, applications, NOC, funds, visa and a month-by-month timeline.

Every year tens of thousands of Nepali students leave for higher studies abroad. Most of them start with the same questions: which country, how much will it cost, what documents do I need and when should I start? This guide answers those questions in one place, in the order you will face them, for students planning the 2027 intakes.
If you only remember one thing, remember this: start 9 to 12 months before your intake. Most problems we see at our Kathmandu office (missed deadlines, weak bank documents, rushed visa files) come from starting late, not from a weak profile.
Step 1: Choose the right country
There is no single best country. The right choice depends on your budget, your grades, your course and what you want after graduation. Here is a quick overview of the main destinations for Nepali students.
| Country | Why students choose it | Things to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland | One-year master’s, English-speaking EU country, tech and pharma jobs, up to 24 months stay back after a Level 9 master’s | Living-cost proof of at least €10,000 per year, high rent in Dublin |
| United Kingdom | Wide choice of universities, one-year master’s, September and January intakes | Graduate Route drops to 18 months for applications from January 2027; funds must be held for 28 days |
| Australia | Strong universities, work rights during study, large Nepali community | Higher tuition and living costs, Genuine Student requirement |
| Canada | Colleges and universities, post-graduation work permit | Study permit caps and provincial attestation letters, rules change often |
| USA | Top research universities, funding and assistantships for strong profiles | F-1 interview, longer degrees, higher total cost |
| India | No visa needed for Nepali students, affordable MBBS, engineering and IT | Check recognition of your college and course in Nepal |

Step 2: Pick a course that makes sense on paper
Visa officers in every country ask the same question: does this course make sense for this student? Your course should connect clearly with your +2 or bachelor’s subject, your work experience or a realistic career plan. Switching fields is possible, but you will need to explain it well in your statement of purpose.
- After +2 (NEB): bachelor’s degree, or a foundation year first if your grades or English score are below direct entry. See bachelor’s in Ireland after +2.
- After a bachelor’s: taught master’s (often one year in Ireland and the UK), postgraduate diploma, or a two-year master’s in the USA, Canada and Australia. See master’s in Ireland from Nepal.
- Popular fields: computing and data, business and finance, nursing and health, engineering, hospitality.
Step 3: Take an English test
Most universities accept IELTS Academic, and many also accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or the Duolingo English Test. Typical requirements are IELTS 6.0 overall for bachelor’s degrees and 6.5 for master’s, with no band below 5.5 or 6.0. Some courses (nursing, law, medicine) ask for more.
Plan 4 to 8 weeks of preparation and book your test early, because test dates in Kathmandu fill up before major intakes. Our IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and Duolingo classes include regular mock tests.
Step 4: Understand the real cost
Your total cost has three parts: tuition, living costs and one-off costs (visa fee, health insurance or surcharge, flights, first month’s rent deposit). As a rough guide:
- Ireland: about €10,000–€25,000 per year in tuition for most non-medical courses, plus at least €10,000 per year in living costs for the visa. Read the full cost of studying in Ireland from Nepal.
- UK: about £12,000–£30,000 or more per year, plus set monthly living-cost amounts that are higher in London.
- Australia, Canada and the USA: usually higher in total because degrees are longer and living costs are high.
Fees and visa amounts change every year, so always check the current figures with the university and the official immigration website before you plan your funds.
Step 5: Apply and get your offer letter
Shortlist 3 to 5 universities across different levels of difficulty. Applications usually need your academic transcripts and certificates, passport, English test score, statement of purpose, CV and two references. Some universities issue a conditional offer first and an unconditional offer after you send your final results or English score.
Once you accept, you usually pay a deposit or part of the tuition. Read the refund policy carefully, especially what happens if your visa is refused.
Step 6: Arrange funds, NOC and documents
This is the step where most Nepali files become weak. Every country wants to see that you can pay for your studies without working illegally. For Nepali students that usually means:
- Bank balance certificate and bank statements, or an education loan letter from a Nepali bank
- Sponsor documents: relationship verification from the ward office, income sources and tax documents
- CA property valuation and annual income certificate, where relevant
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, which Nepali banks need before sending your fees abroad
We cover each of these in detail in our documents checklist, NOC guide and education loan guide.
Step 7: Apply for your student visa
Each country has its own system. Ireland uses the AVATS online form and your file is decided by the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi; the UK needs a CAS and a TB test; Australia needs a CoE and a Genuine Student statement; the USA needs an I-20 and an interview. Read our Ireland student visa from Nepal guide for a full Ireland checklist, or see our student visa service.
Consistency matters more than anything else. Your SOP, financial documents, academic history and interview answers must tell the same story.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a course only because it is cheap, with no link to your background
- Showing sudden large deposits in a bank account without explaining where the money came from
- Copying an SOP from the internet; visa officers recognise template text
- Name or date-of-birth spelling differences between passport, certificates and bank documents
- Trusting any agent who “guarantees” a visa; no one can guarantee a visa decision

Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need to study abroad from Nepal?
It depends on the country and course. For a one-year master’s in Ireland, plan for tuition of roughly €10,000–€25,000 plus at least €10,000 for living costs, as well as visa, insurance and flight costs. Longer degrees in Australia, Canada or the USA usually cost more in total.
Which is the easiest country to study abroad from Nepal?
No country is “easy”, but some are more straightforward for certain profiles. India needs no visa for Nepali students. Ireland and the UK offer one-year master’s degrees with clear visa checklists. The best choice is the one where your course, budget and documents fit well.
Can I study abroad after +2 from Nepal?
Yes. Many universities accept NEB +2 for bachelor’s degrees, sometimes through a foundation year. Grades, English score and subject choice in +2 decide whether you can enter directly.
Do I need a consultancy to study abroad?
No, you can apply on your own. A good consultancy saves time, helps you avoid document mistakes and can access university partnerships. Initial counselling at Hub International Education is free.
