Types of scholarships

• University merit scholarships: partial tuition reductions based on academic results, often assessed automatically with your application.
• Early-bird and deposit discounts: some institutions reduce fees if you accept and pay early.
• Government scholarships: funded by a national government, usually covering tuition and a stipend, with separate applications and deadlines.
• Research funding: PhD and research master's students may receive stipends through supervisors or research projects.
• Need-based and country-specific awards: offered by some universities for students from South Asia or developing countries.

Scholarships to know about

Eligibility, amounts and deadlines change each year. Always check the official scholarship page for the current round.

• Ireland: the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship funds a year of study with a stipend and fee waiver for high-achieving international students. Most Irish universities also offer merit scholarships for non-EU students.
• India: the Government of India offers scholarships for Nepali students through the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, and ICCR scholarships are available for international students. Many private Indian universities offer merit fee waivers.
• United Kingdom: Chevening, the UK government's scholarship for future leaders, is open to Nepalese citizens for one-year master's degrees, plus many university scholarships.
• USA: the Fulbright programme in Nepal and university assistantships for graduate students.
• Europe: Erasmus Mundus joint master's scholarships are open to students worldwide.

What makes a strong scholarship application

• Strong, consistent academic results and a clear explanation of any gap.
• A focused personal statement linking your background, course and career goals.
• Relevant work, volunteering or leadership experience.
• Good English test scores, often higher than the minimum for admission.
• Referees who know your work and can write specific letters.
• Applying early. Many awards are first-come or tied to early admission rounds.
