Study in Germany from Nepal: Tuition, Blocked Account and Visa
Most public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition, with a semester fee for administration and transport, though some states charge non-EU students. For the student visa, Nepali students usually open a blocked account holding the yearly living-cost amount set by the German government. Many bachelor’s courses are taught in German; English-taught programmes are mostly at master’s level.

Why Germany attracts Nepali students
Low tuition at public universities is the big draw, along with strong engineering, computer science and natural science programmes. The trade-off is language: daily life and many part-time jobs need German, and most bachelor’s programmes are taught in German. Learning German before you go makes a real difference.
Entry requirements
- Bachelor’s: Nepali +2 is often not enough for direct entry; many students need a foundation year (Studienkolleg) or one or two years of university study first.
- Master’s: a relevant bachelor’s with good grades; course-specific requirements are strict.
- English test for English-taught programmes, or German test (TestDaF/DSH) for German-taught ones.
- Some applicants need an APS certificate verifying their academic documents. Check whether this currently applies to Nepal before applying.
- Many universities use uni-assist to check international applications.
Costs and the blocked account
Even without tuition, you pay a semester fee each term and must show you can cover living costs. The usual way is a blocked account holding the amount the German government sets per year, from which you withdraw a fixed sum each month. The amount is updated regularly; check the current figure with the German Embassy before you prepare funds.
Student visa and work rights
You apply for a national (D) student visa with your admission letter, blocked account confirmation, health insurance and academic documents. Students can work a limited number of days per year. After graduating, you can apply for a residence permit to look for work for up to 18 months; check current rules before relying on it.
Germany or Ireland?
Germany is cheaper on tuition but often needs German and longer study. Ireland is English-speaking, most taught master’s take one year, and graduates currently get up to 24 months of Stamp 1G stay back with access to EU tech and pharma employers. If you do not want to learn a new language, Ireland is usually the easier European choice.
